All About IJMB Program
IJMB
It’s no secret that university admission in Nigeria has become more competitive and challenging in recent years, particularly due to the strict requirements for JAMB scores.
Many students are anxious and unsure about their academic goals as a result of the pressure to perform well in the JAMB. However, the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) is an alternative that many believe to be a more effective solution.
Since its founding in 1976, IJMB has grown in popularity among prospective college students by giving them the chance to enrol directly in Nigerian universities without taking the JAMB exam.
Program Structure
Duration
The IJMB program lasts for one academic year, with 9 months of rigorous academic activities, usually divided into two semesters. This structure allows students to engage deeply with their subjects over the stipulated time frame.
Curriculum
The curriculum is comprehensive and covers essential subjects relevant to various fields of study. Students attend lectures and practical sessions, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future academic endeavours.
Eligibility Criteria
To enrol in the IJMB program, candidates must meet specific requirements:
O’level Results: Students must possess O’level results from recognized examination bodies (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or GCE). It is also important to note that IJMB accepts a maximum of two sittings only, for O’level results.
Awaiting Results: Candidates who are awaiting their O’level results can also apply for the program.
Documentation: Applicants are required to provide the necessary documentation,
- 8 passports photographs
- WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB certificate/results with a Maximum of two sittings and a minimum of 5 credits
- Awaiting O’level result is also acceptable
Benefits of IJMB
The IJMB program offers numerous advantages that make it an attractive alternative for students seeking university admission:
1. Direct Admission
The main benefits of IJMB are that it allows students to gain direct admission into 200 levels of their chosen university programs and Unlike JAMB, which requires students to reapply and rewrite each year, IJMB results do not expire, providing a more stable and reliable alternative to higher education.
2. Higher Success Rate
Statistics indicate that over 70% of students who enrol in the IJMB program successfully secure admission into universities. This high success rate is attributed to the extensive curriculum and dedicated support students get throughout their studies.
3. Comprehensive Preparation
The nature of the IJMB program ensures that students get very good preparation for university-level studies. With a curriculum designed to cover the main subjects in depth, students are better positioned to succeed and excel in their chosen fields in the university.

Established in 1976 by the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA), which was fully regulated by the government of the former Northern Region of Nigeria, the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) is a high-level examination program.
Ahmadu Bello University Zaria ran, supervised, and controlled the program. to offer chances to students who were unable to obtain admission through IJMB’s conventional channels, especially those who were having trouble passing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams.
The one-year IJMB program is intended for students who have finished their O-level exams, such as WAEC, NECO, GCE, and NABTEB, but were unable to obtain the necessary JMB score to gain admission to the university of their choice.
The program allows successful candidates to gain direct admission into the 200 level for the program of their choice and university of their choice. Unlike traditional methods that require passing JAMB with a good score, IJMB provides a better-streamlined pathway for students to achieve their academic goals.
After its creation in 1976, The first IJMB examination was held in 1977, marking the beginning of a program that has since helped thousands of students achieve their goals of getting admitted to a university.
Over the years, IJMB has gained recognition and approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a legitimate program providing alternative ways for securing university admission, further solidifying its role in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
Today, IJMB continues to be a popular option among students, with many successfully gaining admissions into various universities. The program not only addresses the challenges associated with traditional admission processes but also provides a structured and supportive environment for academic growth.
