Despite the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) program being an excellent alternative for students looking to gain university admission without going through the traditional method, JAMB, it is also important to note that IJMB is not for everyone.
In some cases, it might be unnecessary or not the best option. In this post, we will take a look at the major reasons why you should not consider IJMB for your university admission.
1. If You Have OND, You Can Apply for Direct Entry Without IJMB
If you already have an Ordinary National Diploma (OND), you don’t have to consider the IJMB program. With your OND certificate, you can apply directly for university admission through Direct Entry (DE). Universities recognize OND as a valid qualification for admission into 200-level, making IJMB unnecessary in your case.
2. HND and ND Holders Do Not Need IJMB
Both Higher National Diploma (HND) and National Diploma (ND) holders can also apply for Direct Entry admission. Since they already have a recognized qualification, using IJMB would be redundant. If you have an HND or ND and want to further your education, you can simply apply for a degree program using your existing qualifications without going through IJMB.
3. If You Already Have a BSc and Want Another Degree, You Don’t Need IJMB
For those who already have a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) and wish to obtain another degree in a different field, IJMB is not required. Most universities allow BSc holders to apply for another undergraduate degree through Direct Entry. This means you can apply and get admission in 200-level without needing an IJMB result.

4. If You Cheated During Your WAEC or NECO Exams, IJMB is Not for You
Integrity is a major requirement for success in the IJMB program. If you engaged in examination malpractice during your WAEC or NECO exams, you may find it extremely difficult to succeed in IJMB.
Unlike some secondary school exams where malpractice is common, IJMB exams are conducted under strict supervision, and cheating is highly prohibited. You will be required to sit for your exams independently, without any form of assistance. If you are not prepared for such a disciplined environment, IJMB might not be the best option for you.
5. If Your University of Choice Does Not Accept IJMB
Not all Top universities in Nigeria accept IJMB for admission. Before considering this program, it is important to confirm whether your university of choice recognizes and accept IJMB results. Some universities that do not accept IJMB include:
- University of Lagos (UNILAG)
- Lagos State University (LASU)
- University of Ibadan (UI)
- Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FOUYE)
- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
If you plan to attend any of these universities, IJMB is not an option for you, so, you have to explore other alternatives like JAMB UTME or Direct Entry.
