The Engineering for Development (E4D) Doctoral Scholarship Programme grants a sum of 200’000 CHF to cover the entire study costs of the doctoral students for three years.

E4D Doctoral Scholarship Details:

The E4D Doctoral Scholarship is generously funded through the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

After 10 years of successful operation, the Engineering for Development (E4D) Doctoral Scholarship Programme will begin a new phase in 2024.

The programme supports doctoral students from low-​ and middle-income countries to work on innovations at ETH that have the potential to improve the lives of people in poor and fragile regions. 

Fellows have excellent prospects of becoming leaders in sustainable development by taking up important positions in industry, policy or academia, or by putting research into practice through entrepreneurship. 

2024 E4D Doctoral Scholarship Requirements:

To be considered for the Engineering for Development (E4D) Doctoral Scholarship Programme, you must do the following:

  • Existing contact with an ETH professor in the field of your study (List of ETH Zurich Professors)
  • A high English proficiency level is necessary 
  • Maximum age: 40 years 
  • Excellent MSc or MA degree with high academic performance is necessary
  • ONLY contact an ETH professor with a concrete project idea.
  • Experience in the selected research area is required.
  • Preference will be given to citizens of low- and lower-middle-income countries

E4D Doctoral Scholarship Benefits

  • The grant sum is 200,000 CHF ($228,283) to cover the salary costs of the doctoral students for three years.
  • ETH professors cover the 4th year of doctoral studies as well as costs related to the research itself.

Required Documents for E4D Doctoral Scholarship

To apply, candidates must be ready to submit the following documents;

  • Completed Application Form 2024 
  • CV of the candidate
  • Excellent MSc degree from a recognised university and grade transcripts
  • Support letter of the supervising professor at ETH Zurich
  • 2 reference letters from your field of research
  • Relevant publications or documentation of relevant activities relating to the project
  • List of 5 independent reviewers (same field of research, but unknown to candidate and professor)
  • Bibliography
