The fellowships are jointly managed through Columbia Law School’s Human Rights Institute (Center for the Human Rights Work, Educational and Critical Reflections at Columbia) and Columbia University. LL. M.

Executive Programs are the law school’s flagship graduate programs. Fellowship grants are partial or completely refunded tuition.

Aim and Benefits of Human Rights LL.M. Fellowship

• LL.M. Human Rights Fellows will receive specific skills and guidance in both academic and practical research by Human Rights Institute faculty, advisers, and staff members and will be invited to special events featuring prominent human rights activists and scholars as well as the opportunity to be part of the Human Rights Institute’s leading-edge research projects.
• Fellows also get preference for admission into Columbia’s Human Rights Clinic, an unique course that teaches students to be creative, strategic and rigorous human rights activists while working towards social justice through collaboration with the civil society and community and while developing human rights research and methods.
• Fellows are expected the majority of their time studying in Columbia in the field of human rights and also to be active members of the Human Rights community.

Requirements for Human Rights LL.M. Fellowship Qualification

• In order to be eligible to be considered for an opportunity to receive the Columbia Law School Human Rights LL.M. Fellowship, applicants need to be admitted to Columbia Law School and be accepted into the LL.M. Program at Columbia Law School.
• The applicants must show the ability to demonstrate experience in international human rights, as well as an intention to pursue a career in the field, be it in human rights research or practice.
• Candidates are from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and candidates who are disadvantaged in their the pursuit of education or leadership due to their race or ethnicity, religious belief or socio-economic background or gender orientation are strongly advised to submit applications.
• Law schools from other jurisdictions must possess at least a first-degree in law in order to be considered to be admitted. A degree from a field that is not law, even if it is followed by an advanced law degree is not sufficient to be considered for admission. Candidates who completed a law degree via correspondence or distance education are not admissible to admission.

How to Apply for Human Rights LL.M. Fellowship

Complete Columbia Law School Human Rights LL.M. Fellowship Application includes:

1. A complete application form to enter the LL.M. program via LSAC;
2. A separate, concise essay of between one and two pages, which outlines the qualifications of the applicant to be considered for the award. Candidates should write about their past and present human rights projects, as well as their dedication and interest in the field, their career goals and vision of human rights. The essay must upload into the Human Rights LL.M. The Fellowship area of LSAC online application.
3. Letters of recommendation that refer to the previous work of the applicant and potential future as an advocate for human rights or scholar and/or practitioner. Two letters of recommendation for the LL.M. application could also be considered to apply for the Fellowship in the event that they make a statement about the applicant’s work in human rights and commitment. If one or both letters of recommendation submitted for the LL.M. Application do not refer about the human rights aspect of the applicant’s past and future plans applicants can submit a further recommendation in the LSAC online application. It must be from an instructor or human rights professional who is able to provide a detailed account of the applicant’s human rights stance, past experience and plans for the future as well as
4. An application for financial Assistance in conjunction with an LSAC on-line application. By providing a clear and honest description of your financial assets, you allow members of the committee selection to decide the level of assistance for each Fellow and also maximize the number of Fellowships that it is able to give every year.
