The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) was established in 1978 as a collaborative effort between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the 19 Northern States. Its primary objective was to provide a viable alternative to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for students seeking admission into Nigerian universities.  

The creation of IJMB stemmed from the recognition that many qualified students were unable to secure university admission through JAMB due to limited spaces and competition. IJMB offered a more inclusive and accessible pathway to higher education, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Initially, the IJMB program was primarily focused on students from the Northern States. However, over time, its scope expanded to include students from all parts of Nigeria. The program’s popularity grew as it gained recognition for its rigorous academic standards and successful placement of students into universities.

In 1999, the IJMB was restructured under the auspices of the National Universities Commission (NUC). This restructuring led to a more standardized and regulated approach to the program, ensuring quality and consistency across all participating institutions.

Today, IJMB remains a vital component of the Nigerian higher education landscape. It continues to provide a valuable opportunity for students to pursue their academic aspirations and contribute to the nation’s development.
